Sunday 8 December 2013 - Kalbarri

Sunday 8 December 2013 - Kalbarri

We’ve been plodding along quite nicely these past few days. No fish yet, but Glenn’s only been out twice and there’s a pelagic fishing ban until the 15th so hopefully we’ll have more luck then! The girls are having a ball, especially cause there’s so much to do. We’re starting to get to know the cleaning couple who just started working here a month ago and the managers are friendly too. Also, Mick (who we first met in Broome and then spent a few days at Quobba just before we left as well) arrived in town a few days, so he’s been spending a bit of time with us as well. Life is pretty cruisy at the moment!

Today is a gorgeous sunny day. The breeze is strong but not unpleasant and the haze that’s been hanging around the coastline has dissipated, so the water looks stunning. After our Sienna alarm went off at 5am, I went for an early morning run (10km this time) along the start of the cliff walk and then back through the town. A wonderful start to the day!

After a bit of sprinkling and raking, we tootled off on the bikes to the grocery store for a bit of fruit and veg, then returned to camp to prepare for a little walk. We drove to Natural Bridge, which is the southern end of the national park cliff walk and explored the area for about an hour. It was pretty spectacular – the sandstone cliffs offset dramatically against the blue sky and azure water, which even though we were way up high, was so clear you could see the fish swimming around. We even spotted a couple of dolphins! Next we drove to Pot Alley, which is another incredible little work of art by Mother Nature. It features a rocky descent (rusty red sandstone and shale stacks, honeycomb-like formations and a natural funnel) that opens out to a small white sandy beach and a few cool little sea caves. It’s supposed to be a fairly good little snorkelling spot too, but it looked a bit rough today so I’ll leave it for better weather.

Next we drove back into town (all of five minutes away) and called into the local cafe for a coffee (well, I’m the only one who had a latte – we ordered babycinos for the girls and a milkshake for Glenn). Then it was home for lunch and a swim. Sienna was pretty ratty from her early start so she was banished to bed, while Yasmin plays with some girls in the pool area. Glenn is sprinkling again and I read my book for a while and thought I’d catch up on the blog for a bit while I procrastinated about putting the washing on!

Pretty stunning

More of the same

Me and my big baby

The walk was like 1.2km and she insisted on being carried the whole way!

Nature's Window (from the other way)

This is taken from the right angle but the morning sun doesn't work real well to show you how this should look... you can always google it instead!

She's not really smiling cause we made her walk this one (800m return) and she whinged and grizzled the whole way. Mind you it was hot and the flies horrendous, but still, only 800m!!

Port Gregory

Same place, different person

It's fringed by 5km of reef - good fishing!!

Pink Lake (beta carotene is responsible for the colour)

This was taken mid arvo - apparently midday or sunset it looks really bright pink!

Driving through Lucky Bay

More dinner

Yay!
