Thursday 5 September 2013 - on the way to Cleaverville

Thursday 5 September 2013 - on the way to Cleaverville

After leaving Port Smith, we called in to Eighty Mile Beach for a night (pretty, but just a caravan park full of grey nomads). It was blowing quite hard so we didn’t bother to attempt any fishing and it wasn’t any good for swimming either. But not a bad spot for a night. Next stop was De Grey River, a beautiful little bushcamp beside the river. It was absolutely chockers, probably about 50 camps or so, but we still managed to find a great little spot that had lots of shade and was only a short walk to the water. The river was crystal clear, not stagnant at all and was nice and shallow so the kids could splash and paddle around to their heart’s content. The camp sites are all grassy and green and most of them were nice and flat. There were heaps of lined bins everywhere and even toilets right beside the entrance. It’s nice to hit on little gems like this every now and then!

The second day we were there was a bit of a stinker and apparently the next few days were going to be just as hot, so we decided to push on in the morning. We had to go to Port Hedland to try and sort out a little car issue, something to do with the fuel filter. After arriving in town, Yasmin and I did the groceries while Glenn took Sienna and ran around to the auto shops to try and find the part he needed. Unfortunately it wasn’t available and had to be ordered in for the following afternoon. We found a cheap spot to stay using our new app (called WikiCamps – it’s awesome!) and pulled up at the golf course for the night.

Yesterday we killed time by hanging out at the water park and the library, as well as doing a few other small errands, checking out the port and also fulfilling our civic duty and submitting our vote in anticipation of this weekend’s election. We didn’t know if the part would make it in – we’d been told around 3-4pm, but fortunately it had arrived. After taking the 10 minutes to install it, we hoofed it out to a free bushcamp about 60km out of town, beside Yule River. It was another nice spot, although the bugs were a bit plentiful so I had to cook dinner with a headlight to avoid boosting the protein level of our meal.
