Sunday 16 June 2013 - McGowan Island

Sunday 16 June 2013 - McGowan Island

Finally, we’re onto the real fish! Glenn had a look at the caretaker’s air con yesterday and was repaid by way of a GPS mark a few k’s away. He and Nathan went out there this morning, about an hour after sun-up. They returned with grins from ear to ear and stacks of very tasty specimens! Fingermark, saddletail snapper (nannygai), cod, grunter – all at good eating size – and to top it all off, they each caught one very large saddletail snapper.

The next day's haul...

Monday 17 June 2013 - McGowan Island

Another perfect morning, without the brisk breeze that was blowing the past few days, and Glenn and Nathan have set off for their mark again. Up till yesterday, we’d pretty much had the place to ourselves – there were a couple of caravans off to the side of the main camping area, but then it was just us, Mel and Nathan and another really nice couple (Greg and Chris) who left yesterday morning. A fair few people drive in, have a look around then drive another 7km to Honeymoon Bay and I guess they figure it’s just as nice there so don’t bother driving back. Apparently there’s a bit of rivalry between the two camps (they’re family-owned) but when we went for a drive over to Honeymoon the other day, which looked nice enough, no better or worse than here, I was very grateful that we had ended up at the less populated spot!

Yesterday afternoon a big group of 15 rolled in, plus another couple so it’s not as quiet as it had been earlier in the week. The good news for Yasmin is that there are quite a few kids in the large group so she’s got some playmates. Sienna thinks they’re pretty cool too. I went for a run first thing while Glenn fed the girls breakfast and then they pretty much won’t be seen again until they’re hungry, as they explore the beach with their new friends.

Kids playing on the beach (a long way from the water's edge with Mr Crocodile making his presence felt a few times!)

Sienna and Daddy again (she slept the whole time, even when he got out to throw the cast net for whiting!)

Mmmm whiting - eaten in honour of Nanna, who's birthday was the following day

Cryovaccing fish for the freezer - naughty but yum!

Visiting the museum

"Glenn, go stand there for a photo" "No, I'm sick of photos, I'll take one of you"

Cute

Authentic art (apparently) outside the museum

Where all bad Toyotas go to die - Kalumburu tip (there were heaps more hidden by the scrub) - spare parts anyone?

These flowers are cool - pink with bright red stems!

Crossing the Carson
Not really a big deal but pretty!

The other Carson crossing (we don't normally do this many photos/crossings, but I needed some photos for an article I'm hoping to get published in CTT)

Our home... snails

Sadly, it was time for us to leave paradise and push on
